MIDDLE BLOCKER
The defensive wall
Middle blockers are the most athletic players on the court. You cover the most ground, jump the most times, and must be ready to attack a quick set or close a block in under a second. The middle is where games are won and lost — and the best middles change the entire dynamic of both sides of the net.

TRAINING FOCUS
Footwork Patterns
The 3-step close, the slide step, and the crossover are the three blocking footwork patterns every middle must master. Drill them until they're automatic.
Quick Attack Timing
Work with your setter on 1-ball timing until you can attack a quick set in any situation. The best middles can attack a bad set as well as a perfect one.
Reading the Setter
Study your opponent's setter before every match. Where do their eyes go? What does their body say about where the ball is going?
Repeated Jump Training
Middles jump 80–120 times per match. Train your legs for repeated explosive efforts with plyometric circuits and jump training 3x per week.

Coach's Perspective
When recruiting middles, prioritize athleticism and coachability over current skill level. A 6'2" athlete with great feet and a high ceiling will develop faster than a skilled but limited player. The middle position is the most coachable in volleyball.
